On Thursday 14 June 2012, the AGRANA sugar factory in Tulln celebrated 75 years of sugar production.

From teething problems to a shining example
The Tulln sugar factory was established in 1937 after being recorded in the Commercial Register and licensed by the Federal Ministry of Trade and Transport. Despite initial difficulties experienced during the Second World War and during the structural changes at the beginning of the Eighties, as well as in the course of the EU sugar market reform in 2006, the factory at Tulln has over the years developed into a modern production facility.

75 years after it was established, the Tulln sugar factory is among the largest and technologically most advanced sugar factories in the EU, processing around 12,500 tonnes of sugar beet every day and employing 322 people (380 during the beet processing campaign). “The Tulln sugar factory has played a key role in the development and success of AGRANA and is an indispensable part of the sugar segment in our Group,” says Johann Marihart, CEO of AGRANA Beteiligungs-AG.

Facts about AGRANA Zucker in Tulln
Sugar production in the past year, the so-called ‘sugar beet campaign’ was the longest to date in AGRANA’s history with an average processing time of 123 days. The volume of production in the Tulln sugar factory exceeded 300,000 tonnes for the first time: the largest ever amount of sugar produced in an AGRANA factory to date and a significant increase over the 2010/11 financial year (approx. 260,000). Finally, EUR 11 million was invested in a new granulated sugar silo at the Tulln site, which is designed to store 70,000 tonnes of granulated sugar and is one of the most modern facilities of its kind in Europe. Today, the Tulln factory is home to both the administrative offices of AGRANA Zucker GmbH and the central sugar factory, in which every type of sugar falling under the brand ‘Wiener Zucker’ and available in Austrian retail stores is produced, packaged and stored in a fully automated, high-rack warehouse with a storage capacity of around 8,000 tonnes of sugar, before being despatched.
